OPPOSITE THE OTHER [INTERVIEW]

OPPOSITE THE OTHER [INTERVIEW]

We recently had a chat to, in our opinion, one of South Africa’s best bands Opposite The Other.  Check it out…

As a local band you have done extraordinarily well for yourselves in such a short time, from being in the top 10 of the Spotify Global Viral 50 Chart last year to being selected to open for The Lumineers in a couple of days.  It must all be pretty surreal.  Did you ever think you’d be opening act for one of the biggest bands in the world?

It’s been a really busy and enjoyable last 14 months for the three of us and we really didn’t expect many of these opportunities to come so soon in our career. Getting to play at our dream venues in SA, including the main stage at Rocking The Daisies and Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts, as well as getting to share the stage and work with many of the local artists we’ve admired; such as Matthew Mole, Gangs of Ballet, Jimmy Nevis, Beatenberg and many more, has really been an amazing first year for us.

We were really excited to hear the message from The Lumineers that they’d picked us for the South African leg of their Cleopatra Tour. We’ve been working on what we hope will be very special performances for the shows.

You played your first Rocking The Daisies last year, how did it feel to grace the stage that so many epic bands have played before?

To play the main stage of a festival so widely respected and loved throughout South Africa was something really special to the three of us. It also happened to be our first ever festival performance and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience and support from the festival crowd.

So ‘Stutter Love’ has to be one of our most favourite songs, its got a bit of a Two Door Cinema Club vibe to it which is awesome. What was your inspiration when you wrote the song?

It was really one of those songs which flowed quite naturally in terms of the overall sound we achieved. As for the inspiration, there is a really long explanation of that on our Facebook page. It gets quite deep…

We’ve had incredible support from the team at 5FM and our fans pushing it to No. 1 on their charts for two weeks in a row. The track was our second ever song and it really has been a great stepping stone into South Africa for us.

You’ve almost finished recording your first EP, whats next for Opposite The Other?  Any big dreams or hopes for the future?

We’re currently just working out the final touches of production on each song and then really excited to complete and release our first body of work. It’s been a new and exciting process for us and at the end of the day something we intend to keep doing and improving for a really long time. The music is the core of this all and seeing the initial song ideas come to life is an amazing process.

It’s a big year ahead as we continue to share more music, shows and experiences with people as we aim to build a real community of fans throughout South Africa and the world. We are truly lucky to have a great team and the support of our current fans as we continue to work everyday, taking one step at a time.

You’re playing Lush festival this month, whats your favourite festival to play?

We’ll be playing Lush Festival for the first time this April sharing our new songs and live performance. We’ve had the pleasure of playing a few great festivals during our first year but April 2017 will be our first time playing not only Lush Festival but Splashy Fen and Parklife Cape Town. Think it’s only fair we give you an answer on which is our favourite at the end of the year.

Where’s the best place to stay up to date with all things Opposite The Other?
We’re present on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube with our official website on the way. You can listen to any of our music on Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music or SoundCloud. We’ll have the new songs up soon giving you a lot more to listen to!

We look forward to seeing you play at Lush and keep up the great tunes.

Really great chatting to you and see you at the festival!
